Advanced Placement

General Information

Truman State University and Southeast Missouri State University will offer Advanced Placement Teacher Development Institutes during the summer term of 2009 and invite teachers to attend. Institutes will be held June, July and August and are tentatively scheduled in North Kansas City, Columbia, Rolla, Springfield, St. Louis, Truman State University at Kirksville, and Fontbonne University in St. Louis. These five day institutes are designed for teachers new to Advanced Placement and for those seeking curriculum updates or refresher training. Each institute will be taught by a University faculty member who is an experienced teacher of an AP subject or an AP examination reader or course designer. Usually, a secondary school teacher, who is an experienced AP course instructor, will assist the university faculty member as the co-instructor.

Enrollment in these institutes is limited to 30 seats each and is offered to secondary school teachers. Each participant will receive three hours of graded (A-F) graduate credit. Because of the limited enrollment, participation in these institutes is by application and competitive selection. Applicants will be selected for participation based upon their professional experience as a secondary school teacher, degree held, teaching specialty, recommendation of a principal, AP coordinator and/or discipline supervisor, and demonstrated commitment to initiating and teaching an Advanced Placement course in the parent school within the next two academic years. As part of these institutes, participants will be expected to attend a follow-up session held in conjunction with the College Board's one-day AP Workshops. These workshops are normally held in the fall and spring in the Missouri area.

Because of the number of institutes offered by Southeast and Truman and the time frames in which they are offered, teachers are encouraged to apply early. To receive timely consideration and notice of acceptance to these institutes, please submit your application prior to the deadline of:

May 15, 2009.

Should you have any specific questions about the AP Institutes, the AP Directors are available to meet with you, your area coordinators, and faculty at your convenience to explain the AP Program and its impact on academic standards, its relationship to dual credit courses, the AP courses and examinations, and the grading procedures for the AP examinations. We can assist you in implementing new AP course offerings and expanding or upgrading existing ones in your school district. We can also assist you in identifying strategies for developing collaborative AP programs with neighboring school districts, and for eliciting community support and funding for those courses.
